‘No Quarter’ is an absurdist, ethereal 1960’s one-act play. Four people are trapped in a decomposing hotel tower. No lights, no heat, no lift. Menacing poetical wordplay and mounting terror mix with dark comedy, as they wait for a lift mechanic from Hornsey.
The author, Barry Bermange, was a local writer of Russian-Jewish descent. He collaborated with Delia Derbyshire (writer of the ethereal Dr Who theme) on several soundscapes with a Hornsey theme.’No Quarter’ was an early work, before his stage/radio/TV work became increasingly surreal and sound-enhanced. This Crouch End Players performance is a straightforward rehearsed reading inside the atmospheric St Mary's Church Tower, an absolutely ideal for this play.
